A NEW APPROACH TO MEETING THE CANDIDATES

Long-time London musician, political activist and current CHRW radio host Kevin Dunklee has come up with a new twist on “meet the candidates”.

Kevin’s radio program is called “Rhapsody At Noon” and is heard Tuesdays from noon to 1:30 on 94.9 FM.

Normally a jazz show, Kevin has arranged for several of the candidates for mayor to co-host with him in the weeks leading up to the election. Booked thus far are Ivan Kasiurak (September 21), Cynthia Etheridge (September 28), Joe Fontana (October 5) and Anne Marie DeCicco-Best (October 12).

Each candidate will sit across the table from Kevin and share a  ninety-minute “kitchen table conversation” about the world we live in and life in general. Each has been asked to bring music they enjoy (not necessarily jazz) in the hope that may help listeners get to know the personal side of the candidate, too.

Sounds like a unique format with the potential to be both entertaining and revealing. I can’t help but wonder what signature song each of them might bring along.

For Ivan, perhaps Bobby Vee’s “Rubber Ball” because he keeps bouncing back from crushing voter rejection every election. Cynthia Etheridge is a tougher one but  how about the old chestnut “Hey Look Me Over”?

Some would say Joe Fontana’s signature song should be “I Will Survive” and given her reliance on her record in the campaign, Anne Marie’s top tune might well be “It’s The Same Old Song”.

(Columnist’s Note: Mrs. Columnist says the latter two selections weren’t very nice and since I know which side my bread is buttered on, I offer, as alternatives, “A Change Is Gonna Come” for Joe and “Stand By Me” for Anne Marie.)

And what the heck, how about “It Ain’t Me (You’re Looking For)” for Ivan and “Tell It Like It Is” for Cynthia.

Whatever the musical selections turn out to be, Kevin Dunklee has come up with a very interesting format to put the candidates out before his listeners, and we wish him (and them) every success.
