Instead, I think we should bring back that old proviso that in addition to posting a fee a would-be candidate was also required to garner a good number of signatures of fellow citizens attesting to their credibility. Was it 50? 100? Or how about 200 bucks and 200 signatures gets you into the game? And why was that perfectly sensible proviso dropped? Something in my guts tells me that as with most other dodgy political innovations that have wrenched this country and its traditions out of shape, it can probably be traced back to Trudeau’s damned Canadian Charter of Rights. Heaven knows we wouldn’t want to discriminate against deluded bozos who make rational political debate impossible for everybody.

I have little doubt that crimes increasingly go unreported when the average citizen comes to believe that there is little that the police will or can do about the problem anyway. That lack of confidence in police protection is also what drives actions like David Chen’s.
